Medical Billing specialists can earn between $12.00 to $16.00 an hour, which depends on their qualifications, education, location and position as assigned. Becoming a Certified Medical Billing/Coding Specialist is voluntary; however, more and more employers are looking for job candidates with this certification. To become certified you must pass an exam for the medical billing profession.

Most major employers are looking for formal Medical Billing training at an accredited training school. Training in this field can range from nine months to two years. A cautionary note: any course less than nine months is not recommended since the training program is not accredited by the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA). In fact, certification through the AMBA proves that the graduate has competency in claims handling and that his/her skills are up-to-date, something most employers prefer in hiring qualified candidates.
